new single, ‘seek and find,’ out now!
this song was a gift. i met daniel through my wife and her family. we talked about getting together to write, and at the time, daniel was building his studio. he invited me over, and we spent a while talking about all kinds of things. eventually, we sat down in his living room, and he shared a story from his teenage years, when he was living at the lama foundation in northern new mexico.
at the time, the land was parched from a long drought. the community decided to hold a group prayer to ask for rain. that gathering eventually turned into a rain dance—and then, it started pouring. everyone was dancing in pure joy after going so long without water. daniel said that as he witnessed the dance he had this revelation about becoming the prayer—literally embodying it. it was a powerful experience for him, and he wrote a song about it that he thought i’d connect with.
he picked up his guitar and played it there for me in his living room. as he played, i was transported—dancing in the rain, watching it quench the earth. it moved and inspired me deeply. after he finished, he stepped away to check on something in the studio and said he’d be back in a few minutes. while he was gone, i sat at the piano, started singing the tune to myself, and eventually came up with some ideas for the end of the song. i recorded a few of them on my phone and had to head out.
daniel told me to work on it at my own studio and play it for him when i had something. i was really touched. we hadn’t known each other long, but he was just giving me this song to produce. still, it all felt right. a few days later, i played him what i had—and to my relief, he loved it.
i asked him what he wanted to do on it—maybe sing a chorus or a verse or add some harmonies—but in his gentle way, he declined. he said it didn’t need anything else, that it already felt complete. i was like, “wait, you just want to give me this song?” and he said, “yeah.” but i don’t think it was about giving me something—daniel just wanted to serve the song. that taught me a lot. i’m really grateful for that.
i love this song so much. it’s brought a lot to me in the short time it’s been with me. even though i didn’t live the experience firsthand, i feel like i’m there every time i hear it—in that great prayer, in that deep connection.
